Printing Guide Flyers PDF Print E-mail

The file formats we accept are TIFF, JPEG, or outlined EPS and PDF files. Files must be in CMYK format at 300 DPI or better.

There are three terms you need to know so we may talk the printing lingo. Guides, Final Trim Area and Live Area. Let's take a look below so that you can get a good understanding of how files should be prepared.

Guides: Guides give you a visual reference point of our cut zone. It is important to first make your canvas size and then bring in your guides 1/8th of an inch in on all sides. Any text outside of these guides will fall into the trim area and be cut off. Most design programs, such as Photoshop have guides and will not show up in the final print.

Live Area: This refers to the final size of the printed item. So a business card is 3.6" x 2.1" final trim area. Or, a 1/2 page is 5.5" x 8.5" final trim area.

Trim Area: This refers to the area where type should be inside the final trim area. We ask that the live area be 1/8" to a 1/4" from the final trim area. Example: if a 1/2 page has a final trim area of 8.5" x 5.5", the live area should be 8.25" x 5.25". This ensures a good balance with the printed product and prevents the possibility of cutting type when trimmed down.

Q: How can I avoid delays with my duplication or replication order?

A:
  1. Low-resolution files.
This is the most common reason a job gets delayed. We require all images and files to be a high resolution of 300 dpi (dots per inch) at the actual printable size. Anything lower decreases image quality and will not be usable. If you are unsure of your resolution, or how to check it, refer to the help menu of your program, or contact our Art Department. Images that are low-resolution originally will not increase quality if adjusted to high-resolution; they must be scanned or be native 300dpi files.
  2. Bleeds and templates.
All images MUST have 1/8" bleeds past all edges to allow for shifts and adjustments. We also require artwork to be submitted with our templates. This helps ensure the artwork is setup at proper sizes and printable areas. View our templates for visual details.
  3. Missing fonts.
All fonts either need to be converted to outlines (curves or rasterized, depending on the program) or submitted along with the artwork.
  4. Missing linked images.
Any linked images need to be supplied to verify resolution, bleeds, and layout. Each design program has a different way of checking for this. In QuarkXPress, use the Collect For Output feature. With InDesign, use the Package command. FreeHand and Illustrator have Links menus, which will list all placed images in the document.
